Case Study: A Modern Mountain Home Designed for Family, Guests, and Gatherings in Star Valley, Wyoming

(Design Loft Inc. – Custom Home Design)

The Challenge

The owners of a 30-acre property in Star Valley wanted a new home that reflected their new lifestyle as empty nesters — while still accommodating frequent visits from their growing family.

They envisioned a modern home that would:

  • Take advantage of the surrounding mountains behind the property and the private lake being constructed in front
  • Provide guest bedrooms separate from the owners’ private spaces
  • Offer generous indoor and outdoor living areas for family gatherings and entertaining
  • Remain practical for the region’s heavy snowfalls and rural location

Our Approach

We began by carefully analyzing the site and the family’s lifestyle. The approach drive circled the new lake, arriving at the garage side of the home, so the design needed to create a strong sense of arrival and orientation.

We divided the home into three functional zones:

  1. Guest Wing – Located near the garage for convenience
  2. Central Living Spaces – A large great room, dining room for 12+, kitchen with butler’s pantry, and strong connections to the outdoors
  3. Private Master Suite – Separated entirely from the rest of the home for privacy

The solution to that separation became the most distinctive feature of the design: a bridge connection.

The Design Solutions

1. The Bridge Connection & Water Feature

What began as a playful idea became reality: a bridge section links the main living areas to the master suite and main laundry.

  • The bridge includes shelving for a cozy reading or hangout space
  • Windows on both sides capture mountain and lake views
  • A curved roof enhances the sense of movement and flow
  • Below, a water feature runs from the rear yard under the bridge and connects to the lake, blending architecture with landscape

The master suite steps down with the terrain, enhancing both privacy and harmony with the site.

2. Modern Mountain Design

The home embraces a bold, modern style:

  • Single-sloping rooflines throughout
  • Great room roof rises from one corner to another, reaching over 20 feet high at its peak
  • Expansive windows and glass doors flood the main spaces with light and views

3. Central Gathering Spaces

  • Great room anchored by a two-sided fireplace
  • Dining area large enough for 12+ guests
  • Kitchen with a butler’s pantry for entertaining ease
  • Seamless flow to outdoor living areas

4. Indoor–Outdoor Living

  • Expansive covered patio at the rear for year-round enjoyment
  • Smaller covered patio off the exercise room, also connecting to the garage for convenient access and seasonal patio storage
  • Uncovered front patios off the great room and master suite, both overlooking the lake

5. Accommodations for Guests and Family

  • Guest bedrooms grouped at the garage side of the house
  • Large four-car garage with oversized doors to fit trailers and recreational vehicles
  • Second-floor addition with:
    • A spacious game room with open staircase
    • A “bunk room” for grandchildren
    • A full bathroom

6. Built for the Site

  • No basement due to high water table, but designed with a crawlspace under all living areas for practicality in mountain conditions
  • Rooflines, entries, and garage designed with heavy snow loads and winter usability in mind

The Results

The finished design blends modern architecture with mountain practicality. The home now:

  • Frames both mountain and lake views from every major space
  • Provides a private master suite while still keeping the family connected
  • Creates indoor and outdoor living areas tailored for large gatherings
  • Reflects a bold, contemporary design unique to the owners’ vision and property
